Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
Before deciding to use a vitamin or mineral supplement, you should evaluate your needs. You need to understand what supplements you need before you take them, as an overdose of vitamins or minerals (such as potassium) can have harmful (and deadly effects).
A vitamin supplement is not intended to replace eating healthy. You cannot skip eating your fruits and vegetables and take a supplement instead. These dietary supplements are not intended to replace food, as the absorption of minerals is not complete when take from a vitamin form. They can however help balance out any vitamin or mineral deficiencies you may have.
Vitamins are needed by your body for many reasons including growth, digestion and nerve function. They enable your body to use carbohydrates and fats for energy and body repair. While they do convert food to energy, vitamins have no calories.
Minerals mainly are used in the growth and maintenance of your teeth and bones. They also serve as a building block for cells in your body, and help regulate the balance of fluids. Some minerals also deliver oxygen to cells and carry away carbon dioxide.
Whole foods are the best source of vitamins and minerals for your body. A healthy, well balanced diet helps to ensure you do not need a dietary supplement. However, if you are deficient and need a vitamin or mineral supplement, choose wisely and only take the recommended dose.
