PERIPHERAL BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback first cropped up in the early 50's, when tests were conceived to see if any of the known involuntary responses such as heart pulse rate, brain activity, and blood pressure could be altered voluntarily.

The process was much the same as used today, with sensors being attached to volunteers, allowing the biofeedback device to receive these body readings and give a feedback response. The feedback element would usually be electronic musical tones that changed in pitch according to the signals it received. Hence, the volunteer could hear their own body's functions and consciously try and adjust their body's state of relaxation.

Common forms of biofeedback were using peripheral based measures like EMG, BVP, EDR, TEMP, and Respiratory Waveform.

The aim of biofeedback (as an alternative therapy) is to enable the subject to learn how to control their own body functions and get subsequent health gains. The feedback of their own body functions is the fundamental resource required for the subject to achieve benefits.

The suggested health gains are to combat our own body's reaction to stressful situations. The human body exhibits a well-known response to danger - fight or flight. The heart rate and blood pressure rise to help deal with the situation. This causes undue stress on the human body, especially if done on a regular basis in everyday life! It is for this reason, that we need to learn not to react in this way, and this is where biofeedback come in.

Modern biofeedback uses similar principles with an amazing different range of applications. And, of course, the PC has allowed sophisticated software to be developed to display any body readings.

If you want to purchase one of the many available biofeedback devices for home, then we link to the Wild Divine game and Thoughtstream biofeedback device with Mental Games software for your PC. Both highly recommended!

Biofeedback is a peripheral technology. This (for example) relates to the sensors reading the subject's hands. This is a more accessible technology than neurofeedback - another form of biofeedback, but this time works directly with the central nervous system and as such requires sensors that measure the brain's activity and signals.
